Week 3

In Class, Wed. 9/2:

• Attendance go around

• Drawing Warm-Up

• Sketchbook Share - homework two drawings focused on negative space, one of the in-class negative space exercise drawings


Slides: Week 3 - Moving General to Specific
- gesture drawing discussion, loose wrist
Still life setup with props, easels, tables in the middle of the room, begin drawing practice from setup, practicing general to specific

Slides: Week 3 - Still life setups, View finding, Comparative Measuring, Shapes vs Forms
Make cardboard viewfinders, practice using them, comparative measuring, while drawing from the still life in the room


Homework: DUE Wed. 9/9
A. Set up your own still life at home, use 3-6 objects that demonstrate several different forms (sphere, cylinder, cube, cone, pyramid), position it in front of a calm simple background (white wall, cardboard box, sheet tacked to a wall)
B. With a ruler or straightedge, trace a line framing the perimeter of three pages in your sketchbook
C. Then, draw three versions of your still life setup, each one on a different page and in each one the objects you have setup should be in slightly different positions, be sure to utilize the techniques of: comparative measuring, view finding, and general to specific


Week 2

• Come to class meeting with a writing/drawing utensil/s and paper, your homework drawings and paper sculptures
• Attendance
• Drawing Warm-Up
• Homework share

• Describe and draw exercise partner exercise utilizing the Met Museum drawing collection 
• Logistics discussion (Syllabus and materials discussion 2)


BREAK: [9:15-9:30AM]

IN-CLASS: [9:30-10:50AM]

• Negative space slideshow + building on our composition discussion exercise and review what homework is

• Independent Studio Time 

HOMEWORK: Due Mon. 8/31 in-class in-person - Make 3 drawings in your sketchbook
-use the drawing media/tools of your choice

-spend 10-30 minutes per drawing

-practice and explore at least one different composition type per drawing, reference the six types that we have discussed and pictured in our slideshows = “S” or Compound Curve, Cross, Triangle or Pyramid, Steelyard, Radiating Lines, “O” or Circular - keep in mind the more general terms of symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial as well

-make one of the drawings while sitting inside and of an interior space, make one of the drawings while sitting outside and of outdoor space, and for your third drawing, you pick where and of what direction you take with the piece


-take 10 minutes to go over the negative space slideshow HERE on your own, we will look at it together in class on Mon., in the meantime, familiarizing yourself with it will help you with your drawing homework
